apud Plain. l. 21. c. 11. Post hanc gladiolus comitatus hyazinthis: flos est, quem ξιφίον seu φασγάνιον vocat Theophrast. Latinique Scriptores retentâ voce Graecâ Xiphium vocant. Alias Gladiolus Romanis idem, qui ξίρις et ξυρὶς Graecis, lilio quoad formam similis, sed purpurae nigrae colorem habens, simulque ad ruborem vergens, ac lineis discurrentibus vatius, qualem hyacinthum fabulae describunt. Nomen inde, quod utrinque folium in aciem attenuatum habt: quam ob causam ᾿ιρις ἀγρία quoque Graecis dicebatur, quippe quae et ipsa ob foliorum acumen gladioli nomine Latinis nonnumquam dicta est. Latini Vaccinium quoque appellavêre, de quo purpurae elegantis colorem apud Vett. confieri solitum esse, Vitruv. alicubi docet. Eodem Chymicos auctores ad tingendas vitreas gem mas hyacinthino colore et ad hyacinthos faciendas uti consuevisse, Zosim. ut Plin. in Gallia ad servitiorum vestes adhiberi, refert, l. 16. c. 18. ubi et mancipiorum tardandae pubertati a mangonibus usurpatum addit, qua de re vide infra, ubi de Venalitus etc. Peculiari hinc ritu effodi ξυρίδα consuevisse, habes apud eundem l. 21. c. 7. Effossuri tribus ante mensibus multâ aquâ circumfusâ, hoc veluti placamento terrae blandiuntur, circumscriptam mucrone gladii, orbe triplici, et cum legêrunt, eam protinus in caelum attollunt. Ex Theophrasto l. 9. c. 9. Ubi Salmas. placentas ex trimestri frumento factas, quasi mercedis vice co loco, unde gladiolum effodissent, infodi solitas, adeoque verba Theophrasti a Plin. perperam fuisse accepta, docet ad Solin. p. 1223. et seqq. ubi plura hanc in rem.
